Tesla is reportedly expanding the operational area for its Robotaxi service, with recent sightings of validation vehicles in Bee Cave, Texas, a location outside the current geofence. This move suggests a potential significant increase in the service's coverage, possibly doubling its current reach.
Robotaxi Geofence Expansion
Tesla's Robotaxi service, launched on June 22, has already seen its geofence expanded twice, effectively doubling the service area each time. The most recent expansion increased the operational zone from 42 to approximately 80 square miles.
Testing in New Territory
Recent observations indicate Tesla is testing its Robotaxi vehicles in Bee Cave, Texas, approximately 25 minutes from the edge of the existing geofence. This strategic testing in western Austin suburbs signals preparation for a further expansion, potentially encompassing over 150 square miles.
Competitive Landscape
This expansion occurs amidst ongoing competition with Waymo, another autonomous vehicle service provider that has also been actively broadening its service areas. Tesla's aggressive expansion of its geofence is seen as a direct message to competitors and doubters, while maintaining a cautious approach to safety.
Fleet Growth and Safety Focus
In addition to expanding the service area, Tesla is also focused on growing its Robotaxi fleet in both Austin and the Bay Area, where a ride-hailing service was launched in July. CEO Elon Musk emphasized a cautious approach to expansion, stating, "We are being very cautious. We do not want to take any chances, so we are going to go cautiously. But the service areas and the number of vehicles in operation will increase at a hyper-exponential rate."
Previous Expansion Details
Previously, Tesla expanded its Robotaxi fleet in Austin, increasing the service area from 91 to 173 square miles. The company also reported a 50% increase in available vehicles, though an exact fleet count remains undisclosed. Skepticism often centers on the presence of a Safety Monitor and the lack of transparency regarding fleet size.
