Wholesale deliveries from Giga Shanghai reached a monthly high of 83,192 units.
The Model Y continues to be Tesla's top performer in China, representing 69% of local sales.
Despite sequential growth, year-over-year sales remain down 10% for August.
The introduction of the Model Y L may be contributing to the recent sales momentum.
August Sales Performance
Data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) revealed that Tesla sold 57,152 vehicles in the domestic market during August. Giga Shanghai's wholesale deliveries for the month were even higher, totaling 83,192 units. This figure represents a 22.6% increase from July's 67,886 units, making August Tesla China's best wholesale month of 2025 so far.
Of the wholesale units, 24,304 were Model 3 sedans, and 58,888 were Model Ys. A significant portion of these, 26,040 vehicles, were designated for export.
Model Y Dominance and Market Position
The Model Y once again proved to be Tesla's strongest product in China, accounting for 69% of the company's local sales. It also secured the position of the country's second best-selling vehicle overall. Despite offering only electric vehicles, Tesla ranked as the ninth best-selling automotive brand in China for August.
Year-Over-Year Trends and Future Outlook
While August showcased strong sequential growth, Tesla's sales in China were still 10% lower compared to the same month in the previous year. Year-to-date, Tesla's sales are down 7% compared to 2024 levels. However, industry estimates suggest a 12.6% growth in sales over the past three months compared to March through May, indicating improved momentum in the latter half of the year.
The recent introduction of the Tesla Model Y L, an extended wheelbase, six-seat version of the popular Model Y, is believed to be a significant factor in this renewed sales drive. The performance of this new variant in the coming months will be closely watched.
