Tesla's ambitious Robotaxi service is facing scrutiny from industry veterans, with former Waymo CEO John Krafcik expressing skepticism. Krafcik, now on the board of Tesla rival Rivian, believes Tesla's current ride-hailing offering falls short of true autonomous taxi standards, likening it to existing Uber services in San Francisco.
Krafcik's Critique of Tesla's Robotaxi
John Krafcik, who previously led Waymo for approximately seven years, shared his candid thoughts on Tesla's self-driving ride-hailing service in an interview with Business Insider. He pointedly remarked, "If they were striving to re-create today’s Bay Area Uber experience, looks like they’ve absolutely nailed it." This statement suggests that, in his view, Tesla has not yet achieved a level of autonomy that distinguishes it from conventional ride-sharing platforms.
The Safety Monitor Debate
A key point of contention for Krafcik is the presence of "Safety Monitors" within Tesla's vehicles. He argues that the continued use of these monitors disqualifies the service from being a true "robotaxi." While Tesla's service in Austin does not have a monitor in the driver's seat, it does have one in the front passenger seat. In the Bay Area, a Safety Monitor is present in the driver's seat, a requirement due to current regulations.
Krafcik emphasized, "Please let me know when Tesla launches a robotaxi — I’m still waiting. It’s (rather obviously) not a robotaxi if there’s an employee inside the car."
Tesla's Stance on Safety
Tesla, on the other hand, views the Safety Monitors as a precautionary measure to ensure rider safety. CEO Elon Musk has described the company's approach as "paranoid" regarding safety, acknowledging the significant potential setbacks an accident could cause for any autonomous driving program. Despite this, Krafcik has stated he has no intention of trying Tesla's Robotaxi, thus not offering Tesla an opportunity to change his perspective.
